A Moment of Silence for LA: Grieving and Moving Forward

I live in Los Angeles.

There is such a magnitude of loss here. From the Pacific Palisades fire to the Eaton fire, and so much in between (with so much still burning!), every time I want to talk about what true abundance is—something like the realization that abundance has nothing to do with material things—it just doesn’t feel supportive right now. It feels like I would be bypassing or minimizing the gravity of the situation. It feels like I’m not allowing Los Angeles to grieve in the way it needs to.

While I truly believe that one of the lessons we are collectively learning here in L.A. right now is that abundance has nothing to do with the things we own or possess, the loss is simply too great and too fresh.

So, for now, I just want to take a few moments to sit with you in silence for L.A. And if you're mourning, on any level, that’s okay. These fires have affected so many communities in so many different ways. The trickle-down effect on L.A. is massive. The loss touches so many lives. From the people who lost EVERYTHING—their homes, their clothes, every belonging reduced to ash—to the gardeners who used to care for those homes, to the families on alert, waiting and watching for evacuation orders that week, to the families worried for them and watching the news from afar.

L.A. is changed forever.

It really is. Physically, because it already looks so different, and energetically, which will continue to reveal itself in the coming months.

What I hope for all of us living in Los Angeles, and those touched by Los Angeles, is that those of us who can, keep our nervous systems regulated. We need to do the work to grieve, stay grounded, and steady because we don’t yet know what will be asked of us. We can do this in simple ways: getting enough sleep, drinking enough water, eating nourishing foods, moving our bodies, and whatever other forms of self-care resonate with you. We must keep our hearts open and our lights on. Our communities will need us. We are all going to have opportunities to step up in ways that feel right to each one of us. But if we aren’t regulated, we might miss that calling.
