Unlocking the Power of Your Body

I get asked all the time, "What is somatic work?" or "What do you actually do?" Even my colleagues and I have had some good chats about how to explain it best. As a somatic practitioner and coach, I want to break it down for you.

At its core, "soma" means body, and somatic work is all about healing through our physical selves. This can involve things like breathwork, meditation, and even EMDR therapy, just to name a few. These practices help us tune into our bodies and really listen to what they’re trying to tell us. Our bodies are like built-in compasses, guiding us through life, but we often get caught up in our thoughts and ignore those important sensations.

Sometimes, listening to our bodies can feel tricky—kind of like trying to follow your intuition—but it's different in a lot of ways. When you're thinking about something, I encourage you to ask yourself, "What am I feeling in my body right now? Is there any tension, tingling, or subtle messages I'm missing?"

In our fast-paced world, it’s easy to get stuck in our heads and forget to lead with our hearts. Somatic practices help us reconnect with our bodies, reminding us of a skill we’ve almost forgotten. It’s all about being aware of our physical sensations and using that awareness to navigate our lives more fully.

So, let’s rediscover how to listen to our bodies together!
