This morning I did something different.

Instead of my usual neighborhood walk, I headed to Santa Monica Beach. It had rained a bit in L.A., but by the time I arrived the sky was clear and fresh - that post-rain feeling of cleansing. The ocean was quiet except for the crash of waves. It felt like the perfect way to shake up my routine and shake off some heaviness before the day began.

I don’t want to minimize the gravity of what’s happening in the world right now - or how anyone is feeling. It’s real. So much intensity. So much falling apart, burning up, falling away. For years we’ve heard about economic decline, wars, unrest, climate change, and violence. It can feel like things just can’t get any worse.

It saddens me when friends, family, and clients say, “I just can’t wait until this year is over.” I’ve been hearing that since 2020! And yet, here we are. Life continues. We’re still here. We still have choices.

That’s the heart of being human: free will.

We can choose how we respond - both to a conflict with a friend and to horrific headlines. I’m choosing not to let the outer madness destroy my inner harmony. I’m choosing to keep my light on because the world needs it.

One of the ways I do this is through simple daily breathwork. Pausing to breathe, ground, and reconnect gives me the capacity to stay compassionate without burning out - and sometimes I extend that outwards through volunteering or small acts of kindness. These practices remind me that my light matters.

I feel better when I give - sharing a smile with a stranger, cooking for a friend, sending a kind text. When I share my gratitude, my life expands.

This is a reminder to myself as much as to anyone: life is a lot, but we have choices. It may take effort to choose a brighter path, but it always starts within us.

If you’re longing for more steadiness too, I invite you to join me for a gentle breathwork and grounding session - a space to exhale, reconnect, and keep your own light bright.
